Ashton Vale attend Chess Tournament for Schools at London Olympia

Children from Ashton Vale Primary and Compass Point Primary are keen chess players and take part in Chess for Schools. They have weekly strategic tuition to further their logical thinking and reasoning skills.

All the children who took part last year were invited to an amazing day out to London to see the start of The Grand Masters Tournament. The children gained a real insight into how the grand masters of chess think and were even given tips and tuition by them. One player from each school took part in a game on the very stage that the Grand Master Tournament took place.

There was also the opportunity to play against other children from across the country in a mass, 5 round chess tournament. Organisers commented on the outstanding level of behaviour from all children taking part, which they were particularly proud of as this was the largest number of children who have ever taken part.

The day was rounded off with the privilege of viewing the Round 5 match of Grand Masters Tournament (some people even got the Olympic Champion’s autograph!), before heading back to Bristol on the coach.
